Sometimes when you come back from a shoot, and you look at your images, it feels like you are missing a lot of the elements that you saw and felt when you where on location. The camera is a great tool for capturing the core elements of what you experienced at the time, but like every tool it has it's limitations.

“The negative is comparable to the composer’s score and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways.” Ansel Adams

Masters like Ansel Adams understood that each stage within the development of an image has a role to play when trying to reach the photographers vision for it.

Black and white photos have an inherent, classic look to them. The works of the great masters like Sebastião Salgado, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Ansel Adams all help reinforce this feeling and connection with the past. Paradoxically, they also have a timeless element since, unlike colour it can sometimes be difficult to determine when they were taken.

They bring the viewers’ attention to elements such as contrast, texture, and form.

These elements can be enhanced further in post processing to extents that are more aesthetically pleasing than colour photography.

By leaving out colour the images can be simplified. This is especially useful in Fine Art and Minimalist photography.
