Black and white photos have an inherent, classic look to them. The works of the great masters like Sebastião Salgado, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Ansel Adams all help reinforce this feeling and connection with the past. Paradoxically, they also have a timeless element since, unlike colour it can sometimes be difficult to determine when they were taken.

They bring the viewers’ attention to elements such as contrast, texture, and form.

These elements can be enhanced further in post processing to extents that are more aesthetically pleasing than colour photography.

By leaving out colour the images can be simplified. This is especially useful in Fine Art and Minimalist photography.
